Single Wall vs Double Wall Paper Cups: Which Should You Choose?

Jul 5, 2026·4 min read

If you serve hot drinks, you'll run into this choice: single wall or double wall paper cups. Both hold coffee. The difference is in how they hold it, what it costs per cup, and how the finished cup feels in a customer's hand.

What is a single wall paper cup?

A single wall paper cup is one layer of paper board with a food-safe lining on the inside. It's the most common paper hot cup in the world: lightweight, recyclable-material-friendly, and the lowest cost-per-cup option for hot drinks. The tradeoff is that the single layer transfers heat to the outside of the cup quickly, which is why nearly every single wall cup is paired with a sleeve.

Sleeves protect customers' hands and add a second branded surface. Some businesses print both the cup and the sleeve. Others print only the sleeve to reduce per-cup cost. Either approach works, but the sleeve is an added step and an added per-cup expense.

What is a double wall paper cup?

A double wall cup is two layers of paper board bonded together with an air gap between them. That air gap does what a sleeve does: it insulates. The outside of a double wall cup stays comfortable to hold without any additional layer. Customers pick it up bare-handed and it feels substantial in a way single wall doesn't.

For a coffee shop that wants a premium presentation, custom double wall cups eliminate the sleeve cost and the sleeve sorting step entirely. The cup itself carries the brand.

Comparison at a glance

  • Single wall: lower cost per cup, needs a sleeve, most common format
  • Double wall: higher cost per cup, no sleeve needed, premium hand feel
  • Both: full-color custom printing, hot-drink rated, compostable lining options

Which is better for your business?

For high-volume coffee programs where margins are tight and you're already buying sleeves in bulk, single wall is often the right answer. The cup costs less and your sleeve workflow is already in place.

For specialty cafes and independent shops where the in-hand experience is part of the brand, double wall pays for itself in presentation. When a customer picks up a bare double wall cup with your logo on it, the cup communicates quality before they take a sip.

Some businesses run both: double wall for their espresso-based drinks and single wall for drip coffee where a sleeve is already in the flow. Request quotes on both formats and compare the landed cost once you factor in whether you still need sleeves.

What about cup sleeves?

If you use single wall cups, custom coffee cup sleeves are available as a separate branded item. They can carry a different design than the cup itself, which gives you two distinct branding surfaces. Some businesses use the sleeve for seasonal artwork or promotional messages while the cup stays on a permanent brand design.

FAQ

Quick answers

No. The double wall construction provides enough insulation that the cup is comfortable to hold bare-handed. That's the main reason businesses choose double wall over single wall.
Double wall cups cost more per unit due to the additional paper layer. The offset is that you eliminate sleeve costs and the per-cup handling step that comes with them.
Yes. Both formats are available with full-color custom printing. Double wall cups typically have more surface area for artwork, which is part of the premium feel.
12 oz and 16 oz are the most common sizes for hot coffee programs. A 12 oz cup covers a standard medium coffee or latte; 16 oz covers a large. Most businesses order both.
